Calculate VAT
Add tax to a net amount or remove it from a gross amount.
Add or remove VAT from any amount
Use the calculator to move between a net price, VAT amount and gross price. Enter the rate that applies to your transaction rather than assuming one universal percentage.
VAT formulas
| Calculation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Add VAT | Net × (1 + rate ÷ 100) |
| VAT amount from net | Net × rate ÷ 100 |
| Remove VAT | Gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) |
| VAT amount from gross | Gross − net |
Example: at a 21% rate, a net amount of 100 produces 21 VAT and a gross total of 121. To remove 21% VAT from 121, divide by 1.21 to return to 100.
Important tax context
This tool performs arithmetic only. VAT rates, exemptions, place-of-supply rules, invoicing requirements and recoverability depend on the country and transaction. Confirm the applicable treatment with official guidance or a qualified adviser when the amount matters.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not remove VAT by subtracting the same percentage?
Because the VAT percentage is based on the net amount, while the gross amount already includes the tax. Division is required to reverse it correctly.
Can I enter a custom VAT rate?
Yes. Enter the rate that applies to your calculation.
Does the result prove that VAT is legally due?
No. It only calculates the figures from the rate you provide.
